As I mentioned last week, Google keeps boosting my cost per click! I keep setting up new PPC programs that generate good results for me, then Google drives the price per click up and up, until finally the program is no longer profitable. I have set up over a dozen of these programs, and am still trying to hit upon one that makes money for Google and leaves a bit for me too *8>)

If you would be a successful entrepreneur, you must act. You must do everything within your means to achieve your goal of success. If you just go on sitting there in your house complaining about not getting as much profit as you expect, you will never be successful. You have to invest enough time, money and effort to have any chance of profitable results.

With an Internet business, you must aim just the same. You should maximize all of your Internet marketing strategies, given the wide market that your business will be exposed to. You must imagine the whole on-line community as your potential clients!

Now, one of the best marketing tools that you can use in your on-line business is a list of interested buyers. An opt-in list is the best, most effective and smartest option that you can implement to get the contact information for these potential buyers.

It is one thing to stay in business and it is another thing to have a profitable business. You should choose to make use of list building to ensure that your profits will keep rolling in.

What is an opt-in list?

The opt-in list basically is just a list or a database of names and email addresses of people who have visited your web site or made a purchase through your web site. The list will allow you to send updates, emails and other promotions to those who are subscribed.

It is like an ordinary membership or mailing list in an ordinary shop or club, only in this instance, opting-in is done on-line.

Why should I choose to create an opt-in list?

Any visitor that comes to your web site is a potential client. That potential client means there is a potential sale and that potential sale is a potential profit. Unfortunately, most visitors will not make a purchase on their first visit to your site, so you need to continue to contact them until you make a sale.

Once you have made a sale, the next prudent thing to do is to make sure that this proven customer remains in contact with you and your marketing program.

Potential customers that visit your site and are prepared to leave without making a purchase should be encouraged to leave their name, email address and other contact details because these visitors can become your clients in the future.

Building a list will definitely work to your benefit. A list will allow you to remain in close contact and to develop a good relationship with your clients and web site visitors.

The list will save you money, time and effort because whenever you come up with a new product to promote or new information to share, you will know exactly who to send your updates. Regular contact needs to be maintained with your list if you are to have a chance at a steady source of income. Once you have a list to market to, then the majority of your efforts can be directed to increasing the number of clients and visitors on your list.

Some pointers in building your opt-in list:

  1. You should put a ‘subscribe link’ or ‘subscribe box’ on every page of your web site. Make sure that it is strategically positioned, meaning it is easily located by your visitors. The upper right-hand corner of the page is a good position, but I also use the bottom of many pages.

  2. Promote your web site. Give it as much exposure as possible so that you will get more visitors, and hopefully, more subscribers.

  3. Use contests and freebies that will require visitors to give out their email addresses to participate or download the freebies. I am not good at creating contests, but every page on my sites that seek email addresses offers at least one freebie.

  4. Give out information, articles and updates to your clients - be sure to include your links in everything. Make sure that the information is relevant to the client.

  5. Offer free courses to your visitors and your list. This will not only get new subscribers, but help to maintain a good relationship with your current subscribers.

  6. Use your email signature to make your opt-in list expand. Every time you send out a message your link information should be included.

  7. Do some networking too. Join some forums or discussions and build relationships with the people there. This is another good way for you to get more contacts and clients.

You should also keep in mind that there is one big don't in list building - Don't ever SPAM your subscribers. Make sure that you have permission from your subscribers to send them material or else you will end up with a bad reputation and your email could end up on the SPAM lists.

In general, you should avoid pop-ups. They frequently annoy your visitors, but if you have a solid reason for using pop-ups, don't be afraid to test their effectiveness.

Don't Flood Their Mailboxes

You should also refrain from flooding your subscribers with information. Nothing annoys me more than receiving sales email every day from a list that promised insightful information every week. You could very well end up as an annoyance and find that the members of your list either unsubscribe or just hit the delete key when they see your email. You must balance your need for sales with their tolerance for emails from you. I email my subscribers once a week, and only send a second email once or twice a year if something really important happens between emails.

The benefits of having many regular subscribers are undeniable. They will definitely keep your business going and you will definitely enjoy the profits that will come in. Just remember that things don't end there.

Once you've built up a substantial opt-in list, you must make sure that you maintain it well. Keep in regular contact with your subscribers. Send them updates. Give out special offers and helpful tips. Freebies will be helpful too.

Just follow this process and you will see your profits grow.
