There is only one major factor in generating income for your web site: A steady flow of web site traffic. If no one comes to your site, there’s no chance you will generate income from it. Many sites have tried and failed to attract significant numbers of visitors. The result has invariably meant the demise of these sites. As my grandfather was want to say, “It also takes money to make money.” A corollary of that is, “It takes money to maintain an income generating site.”

BUT, it doesn't necessarily take a huge wad of cash to generate traffic for your web site.

Ever wonder how the big guys drive traffic to their sites? Most of them are spending tons of money to drive the traffic to their sites. They invest in a multitude of advertising campaigns and different forms of marketing schemes and gimmicks. For them, this is obviously worthwhile because, it’s what makes them into the owners of high earning, big hitting web sites.

Luckily there are other ways for those of us who don't really have their resources. There are many ways to generate low cost web site traffic without having to spend what you don't have or can't afford. Keep in mind, that although high cost methods have made millions for some, many people have ended up losing their shirt using these same methods.

Top Five Ways to Generate Low Cost Traffic

Here, as I see it, are the top five ways to generate low cost traffic for your web site. When you have a lot of visitors, even if you only get a small percentage of conversions, your site can be successful. The trick is to make sure that those visitors are interested in what you have for sale. If you are selling golf items, there is no sense in attracting visitors who are ready to buy woodworking tools. Some may buy, but the number will be very small. Far better to spend your effort attracting folks who are ready to buy what you are selling.

1. Exchange Links

This is a sure and proven method. You rarely see a site where there are no links other sites. Many webmasters are willing to exchange links with you to create more public awareness of their sites. With a lot of links from related sites, you'll soon see and feel the upsurge of the traffic coming into your site.

A major prerequisite in exchanging links is to find sites within the same niche or having similar content as your site. The sites should share a common subject so that there is validity in having the links. Think of these links as a service to your target traffic. If your visitors are not likely to be interested in the link, don't pursue it!

Exchanging links also boosts your chances of getting a high ranking in search engine results. It is common knowledge that search engines ranks high sites that have inbound and outbound theme-related links. Lately, search engines have been downgrading the value they place on reciprocal links. They are now giving priority status to one-way incoming links. One way that you can reciprocal linking with one way links, is to use a third site. Links are such that site A points to site B, site B points to site C, and site C points back to site A. With a good ranking position in the search engines, you will generate qualified traffic to your web site without the high costs associated with most other methods.

2. Traffic Exchange

This is like exchanging links but on a different, higher level. This may cost a bit more than exchanging or trading links but could be cheaper because you get to earn credits. You can use those credits when viewing other sites, while you earn credits that encourage someone to view your site.

Traffic exchange services are basically you viewing another site or page, in return for someone else viewing your site. The upside is that you both benefit from each others’ efforts to generate traffic. The downside is that it does take discipline to regularly view partner pages. You can usually purchase extra viewing credits also.

3. Write and Submit Articles

There are many ezines and on-line encyclopedias on the Internet which provide free space for articles to be submitted. You can write the articles yourself, or use one of the many freelance writers who are willing to write for you for a small fee. If you are short on money, you will be wise to write the articles yourself.

Write articles that are themed to the niche of your site. Write about something that you have expertise in so that readers will see your knowledge about the subject and be eager to go to your site. Write articles that give tips and guidelines to the subject of your niche your site.

At the end of every article include a resource box that links them to your site. Be sure to write a little about yourself and your site. If you provide a light, information-laden, interesting article, readers will go to your site for more.

4. Make a Newsletter

This may sound like hard work because of all the articles you need to publish a newsletter but au contraire, this is not so. First, you can use the articles that you sent out in the tip above. Second, there are many writers and sites that are willing to provide free articles as long as they can get their name in on your newsletter.

As your newsletter gets passed around, you can widen your public awareness and build an opt-in list that can regularly visit your site.

5. Join On-line Communities and Forums

This only requires your time and nothing else. You can share your knowledge and expertise with many on-line communities as well as your web site. You can get free advertising when you go to forums that have the same subject or niche with your site. Make sure that you have a brief 3 -5 line signature appended to every posting. It should not be a blatant ad, but should identify you and point people to your web site.

Share your two cents and let them see how knowledgeable you are with the subject. As you build your reputation, you also build the reputation of your site, making it a reputable and honest business that could be frequented and trusted by many people.
