My Mastermind group spent a while on Monday talking about our respective website. After an unbiased review, it is apparent that my IdeaMerchant site needs some upgrading - about 90% of the first page needs reworking. The menu system needs to be redone and I need to set up a blog. I spent most of Tuesday setting up the blog and revising the menu. I'll spend the rest of the week on copywriting and populating my blog *8>)

I am always working to get a higher placement for my sites on the search engines. I am not always successful in getting my sites on the first page of Google. About a month ago I read a new ebook on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and picked up a couple of tips. I was really surprised to find that the three sites where I used the new ideas on jumped from lacklustre placements to the first page on Google, and first place on Yahoo. When is Internet Marketing Worthwhile?

Just realized that this is the third article on Internet Marketing in a row. Not my usual practice. I'll have to make sure that I don't repeat this mistake again.


In general the answer to this question is always yes, but the answer is much more involved. Sure Internet marketing is worthwhile but as with any type of marketing it is only worthwhile if it is done well. For example you can spend thousands of dollars on a television marketing campaign but if no one sees your commercials or your commercials do not reach your target audience and generate sales, the advertising was not worthwhile.


So perhaps a more appropriate answer to this question would be that Internet marketing is worthwhile when it works. This is a rather vague statement, so letís investigate the issue further and discover how you can make Internet marketing work for your business.


Target Audience

One of the core principles of marketing is to make sure that your advertising reaches your target audience. This is so important because your target audience is the people who are most likely going to be interested in purchasing your products or services. It is much easier to sell your products or services to those who already have an interest in your products and services than it is to convince those who are not the least bit interested in your products or services.


Example

Just to clarify the point, suppose that you have a business that sells fishing rods. You will want to market your products to those who enjoy fishing either competitively or as a leisure activity. Why these folks? Because among this audience you are likely to find people who may be interested in purchasing a new fishing rod.


It would make sense to place an advertisement for your business on a website selling bait and tackle or a website which organizes fishing trips in exotic locations. Conversely it would not make sense to place your advertisement on a website selling telescopes because you are not likely to reach a large target audience here. There may be some stargazers with an interest in fishing but your advertising dollars and efforts would be better spent placing advertisements with websites more closely related to your business.


Two Factors

When purchasing advertising space on another Internet website you want to consider two factors:


  1. Traffic - the amount of traffic the other website receives. This is significant because the greater the traffic the website receives, the better the chance that you will receive a sale. For this reason it is important for your advertisement to appear on a website which receives a great amount of traffic each month.

  2. Related - closely related to your own . That way it is likely to attract an audience similar to the one you are seeking and thus increase your potential sales.

Advertise on a website that meets both of these criteria, and it will help to ensure your business is getting a great deal of quality exposure through this advertising.


Advertisement or SPAM?

When it comes to Internet advertising, keep in mind that there is a fine line between great advertising and spam. Itís one thing to try to get as much exposure as possible, but sometimes you can go overboard and your ads will wind up being considered spam.


Internet users who see your advertisement in a couple of key locations are likely to notice your advertisement and may be compelled to visit your website, either immediately or keep it in mind for a future visit. However, Internet users who see your advertisement everywhere they look are likely to view your advertisement as spam. This can be very harmful because they are not likely to visit your website because they expect it to be some type of scam or expensive rip-off.


Monitor

In any Internet marketing campaign it is important to carefully monitor the results of your marketing efforts and make changes to your campaign as necessary. This is important because you want to make sure your marketing efforts are paying off. As we discussed last week, the best way to do this is to evaluate the results of your advertising carefully, expand what works, and discard what doesnít.


One way to do this is to place special codes in each one of your advertisements. This way you will be able to determine which advertisements are generating business for you and which ones are not. You should use this information to decide whether you should modify the ineffective website or if it time to stop running ads on specific websites. You may even what to discontinue specific advertisements altogether. If you decide to modify any ads, you will want to continue to monitor the results to determine whether or not the changes made the advertisements more effective.
